Happy Chinese New Year
According to the Chinese lunar calendar, today is the last day of the Year of the Horse - tomorrow will be the start of the Year of the 羊 (yang). You may be wondering why I have left a Chinese character among the English words. The reason is that even though it is only one character, there are many ways to translate it - is it the Year of the Sheep, Goat or Ram?
It goes to show - sometimes it is not easy to translate from Chinese to English, even it is just one simple character. Where there are many possible translations, the translator must choose the most appropriate one based on context, linguistic requirements, and the source and target culture. Decisions, decisions! Sometimes a translation just won’t work in the target culture at all, and the translator might choose to transcreate. Then we start getting really creative!
All that is left for me is to wish you a very happy Chinese New Year! Happy Year of the Yang!
